DMA still needs your support - before June 30!

It’s mid-June here at Davis Media Access (DMA). which can only mean one thing: Kid Vid! The first of four summer training sessions for kids aged 10-13 is wrapping up. It’s been a fun week in which kids have learned basic media literacy and media production skills, gotten their hands on lots of cool equipment, and worked on collaborative projects.

Actually, June means one other thing, and that’s the rapidly approaching close of our annual fund raising campaign by June 30, the end of our fiscal year. Our community has been very generous and we approaching almost $17 out of $20k needed. We thank everyone who has supported the fund-raising effort to date.

If you have yet to donate, you may do so online at davismedia.org/donate or by mailing a check payable to Davis Media Access to 1623 Fifth St. Ste. A Davis, CA 95616.

While it's true that we can make $20k go a long way, it's also true that if we don't raise this money every year, we can’t continue to provide services at current levels. This money supports a variety of services we provide to our community, but primarily volunteer-driven KDRT 95.7 FM, as well as support for youth media, and local election coverage. Raising this money is not optional: it is critically needed to support the work we do, and we must meet the goal by June 30.

Meet the Candidates Statements Ready to View - DMA Election Programming 2020

Davis Media Access (DMA) has completed videoing 26 candidate and campaign statements for local elections.  DMA is the only nonprofit community media and technology center serving Yolo County, and has provided free local election coverage to candidates from school board through Congress as part of our mission for more than 30 years. Diane Dedoshka, DMA’s Studio Manager and election producer, noted how different this year is from all other years.

Basic Camera Orientation - Canon XA-25

Recently DMA hosted a camera orientation workshop for our Canon XA-25s.  During the hands-on workshop, the following slide presentation was used.  As promised, we have posted it so workshop participants can review it at their leisure.

Canon XA-25 Basic Camera Orientation Slideshow.pdf

The file can also be found at davismedia.org>About>Forms

A full manual can be found here

(although DMA makes no guarantees as to its accuracy)

Lastly, below is a summary pdf of what we covered.

*Please note that all this material was supplementary to the workshop and is not a complete course in and of itself.

PS> It has been noted that the XLR cord release mechanism on the XA-25 audio handle can be tricky to operate.  Some XLR cords have a different style of rim latch which (when inserted) makes it seem like the XLR port release lever on the camera is loose or broken.  You simply have to firmly press the latch all the way towards the XLR cord housing to withdraw the cord.  After cord removal, you'll see the release lever is firm and springy again. This was noted with the long, blue taped XLR cord but may happen with others.

Possible Comcast outage

If you aren't getting our channels right now, please be aware that service is out for some customers because a Comcast fiber line was accidentally cut somewhere in Davis and they are on the job getting it repaired.  We don't have any more information, and the channels will come back as soon as service is restored.

A Chevy Malibu and a guy named Bill

Last year, DMA lost a longtime volunteer and good friend in Bill Smith. Bill’s family wanted to honor his wishes to help DMA, so they worked with our partner the Center for Car Donations (centerforcardonations.org) to get a good price for Bill’s classic but not-running 1967 Chevy Malibu four-dour. Here’s the note staff at the Center sent to us:

Welcoming Eunah Cho

DMA is happy to announce the addition of Eunah Cho to our part-time production staff.

Eunah graduated from UC San Diego with degrees in Violin Performance and Communications in 2009, and has since returned to her roots to help and learn as much as she can at Davis Media Access.  In her spare time she enjoys playing chamber music, marveling at creativity, baking treats for awesome people, and doting on her dog, Molly.
