Local High School Graduations: Each year, as part of the work DMA does in managing DJUSD Channel 17, our staff and interns record all five local high school graduations (Davis High School, Da Vinci Charter Academy, King High School, Davis School for Independent Study, and Davis Adult School). Plans are underway to record this year’s commencement services. Copies of each ceremony will be available for a fee; look for more information about how and where to order in early June.
A Month of Cluck: The Tour de Cluck is a fantastic Davis, CA community affair featuring a series of fun elements throughout the merry month of May. The month-long fun & educational fundraiser will satiate your hunger for entrainment or satisfy your chicken curiosities. The month is well on, with many more events planned & leading up to the big day of the Tour de Cluck, Saturday, May 25, 2013. Sundays at I-House: The second season of Sundays at I-House comes to a close with a full evening of All-Stars: Clarence Van Hook, Midnight Jazz Trio, and Viramundo; as well as Bonanza King, making their I-House debut. Sunday, May 26, 5-10 p.m., 10 College Park in Davis. This on-going FUNdraiser benefits International House, Davis and is free and open to all ages. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated. Davis Music Festival: Our good friends at the Davis Music Festival are doing it again. The list of bands is epic, and they’ll be playing at 15 community venues around town June 22-23. Davis Film Festival: What’s a community-minded person to do on such a busy weekend? DMA is proud to once again also serve as a sponsor for the Tenth Annual Davis Film Festival, which also takes place Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, 2013 at the Veteran's Memorial Theater, 203 E. 14th St. in Davis. Feature-length films and shorts from around the world and our own backyard will be presented in all genres: narrative, documentary, experimental and animation. Deadline for film submissions is June 1. Apply through Without A Box, the international film festival database, or online at www.davisfilmfest.org. (Yolo County filmmakers pay no entry fee).
This year's festival includes Saturday Shorts, Saturday Night Artsy/Edgy Films, Sunday Features with Selected Shorts, and Sunday Night Human Rights Night. Tickets for each are $8.00 general admission, with discounts for students and seniors. There will be Q and A sessions with filmmakers, and a cake reception on Saturday. Volunteers are needed to sell tickets and concessions. Tickets and more info available at the website, noted above.
Juneteenth Celebration: The Stephens Branch Library will co-host the celebration of Juneteenth in partnership with the Friends of the Davis Public Library and the City of Davis from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, June 22, at the Veterans’ Memorial Center, 203 E. 14th St. Additional activities will take place at the library, 314 E. 14th St. Juneteenth is an annual observance to remember when Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865. Yolo County’s free, family-friendly Juneteenth celebration will feature food, entertainment and educational exhibits. This year’s event also will feature a hat fashion show.
