Programming Highlights: DCTV & DJUSD

ON DCTV –

It’s October – Must Be Time for Tarantulas!

Ruth Chambers, intrepid host of “The Chambers Street Theatre” on both DCTV and KDRT, offers up “The Halloween Special: The Tarantula Show” this month on DCTV. A consummate storyteller, Ruth will read The Tarantula Story from ‘Roughing It,” by Mark Twain. The show airs live on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m., with repeats scheduled throughout October (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at noon); weekends at 9:30 and 11 a.m. and 2:30 and 10 p.m.). Tune in live or find the show at online and get a tasty helping of seasonal atmosphere.

In the Studio is produced at Davis Media Access (DMA), the non-profit community media center serving Yolo County. The program provides local newsmakers and community organizations with easy ways to promote their activities and events. DMA produces four segments of ITS each month, using the recording sessions as a hands-on learning lab for local residents interested in media production. “In the Studio” airs Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays at 7 p.m. on DCTV, Comcast Channel 15, and on demand at Menu 99 on AT&T's U-verse. Please see sidebar for current episodes.

The Value of a Community Archive – and Partnerships: Our good friends at OLLI, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, do yeoman’s work of presenting vibrant local voices as part of their commitment to lifelong education. Sometimes what has been recorded preserves a voice, and a vision, that is lost when a community member passes. Roger “Terry” Turner passed earlier this year.  DMA thanks OLLI and Cynthia Kellogg for allowing us to present the following archived program featuring Turner: OLLI Presents: “Untold Stories of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi and Memphis."

Also, currently airing on DCTV “OLLI Presents: Dr. Mark Belafsky, “Using DNA in Genealogical Research.”

In the DCTV Archives

Stories of GATE and Detracking” with Dr. Fred Brill.  Brill describes his experience as superintendent of the Lafayette School District, where the teachers are supported and encouraged to provide differentiated instruction for students at all learning levels.

Davis Parent University: The Community-wide K-12  Parent Education  Collaborative is composed of representatives from the DJUSD (K-12). Our mission is to provide high-caliber events and programs to our community’s parents, caregivers, teachers, and administrators. The committee’s scope of work includes the annual Parent University Lecture Series. The  collaborative strives to assist our PTA’s/PTO’s in achieving their most important goal, to be a strong advocate for the education and well being of every child.

Food: DMA has a long history of creating and covering programing related to the food safety net, the locavore economy, and food safety. Thanks to a small grant from the Columbia Foundation and the support of Dr. Desmond Jolly, we are beginning to archive these programs in one place. This will change and have visual links in the month to come, but here’s a look at the programming: https://dctv.davismedia.org/foodnet.
