"Advancing the Dream: Empowering and Uplifting the Next Generation"
The 25th Annual City of Davis Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration took place on Monday, January 21, 2019 in the Varsity Theatre, Davis, CA.
This year’s event featured presentations and music to help commemorate the life and accomplishments of Dr. King.
Speakers included Gabriel Patterson, a PhD Candidate in Agriculture and Environmental Chemistry. Cindy Pickett, a professor in the Psychology Department, Associate Vice- Provost for Faculty Equity and Inclusion at UC Davis, and a school board member for the Davis Joint Unified School District.
They spoke to this year’s theme of “Advancing the Dream’ Empowering and Uplifting the Next Generation”.
Attendees were also treated to performances by Afrovibes, children of the Parents of African American Children Davis group reading One Today, a reading by City of Davis Poet Laureate James Lee Jobe, a singing performance by Nathalie Minya, along with her children and entertainment by well-known local musician Dick Holdstock and the Davis Freedom Singers.
Mayor Brett Lee welcomed attendees along with emcee Elizabeth Mosley from the Human Relations Commission.
The program is presented by the Davis Human Relations Commission and the City of Davis.
